Description from the seller
Original mining safety lamp manufactured by the historic British firm E. Thomas & Williams Ltd, based in Aberdare (Wales, United Kingdom) and regarded as one of the most prestigious manufacturers of lamps used in coal mining since the 19th century.
The piece features the classic solid-brass construction with an oil reservoir at the bottom, a glass protective cylinder, and an upper ventilation system. It retains its original front plate where it reads:
“MINERS SAFETY LAMP – COLLIERY NAME – SERIAL NO. – E. THOMAS & WILLIAMS LTD – ABERDARE – UNITED KINGDOM”.
This type of lamp was used in mine galleries to work more safely in the presence of flammable gases, becoming over time one of the most representative symbols in the history of British mining.
The lamp retains its traditional wick system, not electrified, and features an attractive patina on the brass as a result of the passage of time.
Approximate dimensions: 25 cm high and 10 cm in diameter at the base.
A very interesting piece for collectors of mining, industrial history, or antique lamps, as well as a decorative object with great historical character.
Please examine the photographs carefully, as they are part of the description and show the actual condition of the piece.
