Smoke and Offering is an original oil painting by Antonio Sciacca (b. 1957) from Italy, in the Baroque style, a 2026 portrait on 72 x 54 cm, signed and in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
In this striking composition, Antonio Sciacca presents a solitary female figure against a luminous turquoise ground. The subject stands frontally, her gaze calm and unwavering, while her pale hair rises upward in two sculptural forms that lend the portrait an otherworldly presence. Draped in a vivid red garment rendered with careful attention to folds and light, the figure holds a golden chalice from which a curling plume of smoke emerges and winds through the composition.
The painting draws upon the visual language of classical portraiture while introducing symbolic elements that suggest ritual or quiet transformation. The chalice, traditionally associated with offering, devotion, or alchemical change, becomes the central narrative object. The drifting smoke creates a fluid movement across the otherwise still composition, softening the geometry of the figure and introducing a subtle sense of mystery.
Sciacca’s technique reflects a careful balance between realism and symbolic staging. The controlled palette—dominated by the deep red of the robe and the cool blue of the background—creates a restrained yet dramatic contrast. The result is a contemplative work in which the figure appears suspended between sacred iconography and contemporary figurative painting.
