Description from the seller
Diego de Covarrubias y Leyva (1512–1577):
Didaci Covarruvias a Leyva Toletani, Episcopi Segobiensis, Philippi Secundi, Hispaniarum Regis, Summo Praefecti Praetorio Omnia Opera.
1586, Latein
Early Lyonese complete edition of the works of the prominent Spanish jurist and theologian Diego de Covarrubias y Leyva (1512–1577), published in 1586 in Lyon under the title Didaci Covarruvias a Leyva Toletani, Episcopi Segobiensis, Philippi Secundi, Hispaniarum Regis, Summo Praefecti Praetorio Omnia Opera. Tomus Primus.
Covarrubias, Bishop of Segovia and adviser to King Philip II, is regarded as one of the formative figures of Spanish late scholasticism and the School of Salamanca; his writings on canonical and civil law were influential throughout Europe.
The volume is equipped with carefully executed copper engravings that reflect the high standard of Lyonese print and engraving artistry of the late 16th century. The copper engravers worked for leading studios and are characterized by finely crafted title frames, coats of arms, and rich ornamentation, which give the work a distinctive aesthetic quality.
Copies of this 1586 Lyon edition are rare on the market and are recorded in library catalogs only in small numbers, underscoring the appeal of the volume as a collectible of early modern legal and theological history.
41.5x29 cm. 545 pages. Bound in a worked rough-leather binding in yellowish-brown. Inner pages somewhat browned, sporadic worm traces, some old restorations, otherwise very well preserved.
