RED SIGNAL FROM EARTH - From the critique at Galleria Reart: This work by Michael Peddio, created in 2025, fits into the artist’s painting research devoted to Earth observed from above, a series developed between 2025 and 2026 in which the landscape is interpreted as an energetic and perceptual space rather than a geographical representation. The composition centers around an essential horizon that divides the painting surface into two dimensions: earthly matter and atmospheric space. From this contact point emerges a powerful vertical red form that traverses the canvas like a column of energy, evoking a natural phenomenon, a signal or impulse emanating from the planet’s surface.
The lower part of the canvas features intense, stratified painterly matter, built up through overlays of pigments, scratchings, and gestural interventions. Warm tones of red, orange, and earths dialogue with darker, deeper areas, suggesting a terrestrial morphology observed from an almost aerial distance. The painting thus becomes an emotional map of the landscape, where matter becomes territory and the painterly gesture becomes a trace of movement and transformation.
In the upper part of the composition the color opens into a more rarefied and luminous dimension, creating a visual tension between material weight and atmospheric space. The work belongs to the artist’s contemporary exploration of the relationship between energy, territory, and landscape perception, where the Earth is not represented as a static place but as a living organism traversed by forces and continuous transformations.
Michael Peddio: My free expression is not confined by a predefined idea, but conveyed through color and form as the sole instruments, a return to a primordial form of art. The absence of drawing is, for me, a prerogative of the indeterminacy of the work at its birth; as in life and especially in the times we live, there can be no certainty of outcome for any situation. My painting evolves from a white canvas to an unpredictable ending. For me there is only the acceptance of art as an unpredictable and uncontrollable process.
Michael Peddio began making steps as a child, inspired by his father Riccardo, a painter. The turning point comes around age 30, thanks to meeting master Teobaldo Cattini, a Reggio painter of the Macchiaioli school, who opens the doors to painting. A great source of inspiration and strength from the former boxer painter. In 2012 the meeting with artist Barbara Nicoletto, his current partner, opens the doors to his second artistic season and artistic maturity. Between 2013 and 2014 painting begins to take on an inner meaning. Figurative work begins to give way to introspection. The inner strength takes over and the canvas becomes a gap, with the passing of years increasingly free of filters, increasingly unreserved in showing his own I. Strength and weaknesses are shown without shame. The man is naked, without masks.
In April 2016 he is noticed by critic Daniel Buso and, together with his partner Barbara Nicoletto, he exhibits in: Il Museo in Vetrina, Bipersonal at Museo CA’ DEI CARRARESI in Treviso, a very important location rarely granted to an emerging artist.
In 2018 Michael Peddio reaches painterly maturity. His paintings are free from conditioning, they express with harmony and beauty the raw reality the artist wants shown. We find strength and harmony. We find positivity even in tragedy. We find beauty.
Since 2018 the artist collaborates with Galleria REART, opening up to the art world and interacting with other artists on the national scene. We see him exhibiting and also curating exhibitions. He co-founded with artist Barbara Nicoletto and Giorgio Ferretti the movement of the Cromatisti. They meet in a Factory, a place of exchange and work.
In 2020 the meeting with Angela Lazzaretti, owner of Radium Artis Gallery, is a great source of national-level artistic exchange for Michael Peddio. The exhibition in Pietrasanta at Radium Artis Gallery was his meaningful debut in the art world, at 46, giving him the visibility his works deserve. In 2021 the meeting with critic and curator Alberto Navilli opens another evolutionary stage, seeing his art grow ever more along a path of increasingly raw and uncompromising immediacy.
