Original 2023 oil on canvas painting Magia Potagia by Carmen María Morillo Barragán (Spain), 90 × 90 cm, unframed and mounted on a stretcher, signed, in very good condition; a contemporary still life featuring dolls wrapped in fabrics.
Description from the seller
Artist: Carmen María Morillo Barragán (Spain, 1989).
Title: Magia Potagia
Year: 2023
Technique: Oil on canvas.
Dimensions: 90 × 90 cm (height × width). Unframed work, mounted on stretcher.
This work presents a contemporary still life, a current reinterpretation of the classical genre of painting that traditionally represents everyday objects arranged in an intimate and carefully composed scene.
Instead of the usual elements of historic still life—fruit, flowers or domestic utensils—the artist uses children's dolls wrapped in printed fabrics and colored papers, creating a scene rich in character and narrative. The soft volumes, the textures of the fabrics and the color range dominated by pinks create a delicate atmosphere that contrasts with the almost sculptural presence of the dolls.
The work combines figuration and painterly gesture, with areas of looser painting that bring dynamism and contemporaneity to the composition. The result is a singular still life that explores themes such as childhood, play and memory through seemingly simple objects turned into protagonists of the scene.
An original piece with strong visual presence, ideal for collectors interested in contemporary figurative painting with a poetic reading of the everyday.
Signature: Hand-signed by the artist on the reverse.
Condition: Very good. Work in perfect condition, with no damage or restorations.
Edition: Unique piece.
Provenance: Directly from the artist's studio.
Shipping: The work will be carefully packaged, mounted on a stretcher and protected for transport.
Carmen María Morillo Barragán (Seville, Spain, 1989) is a visual artist specializing in contemporary figurative painting. She graduated in Fine Arts from the University of Seville in 2016, where she developed a solid training in drawing and painting focused on the representation of the figure and everyday objects.
She broadened her training through specialized courses in realism and pictorial figuration at the Museo Casa Ibáñez (Olula del Río, Almería), taught by the renowned painter Antonio López, a key figure of Spanish contemporary realism. She also trained in drawing and sculptural processes at the University of Seville.
Her work has been recognized in various national painting competitions, including the National Painting Prize José Arpa (Ayuntamiento de Carmona) and the Second Prize of the National Painting Competition "Ocaña." She was also recipient of an artistic residency grant in Paisaje Altea (Alicante).
Meanwhile, she has developed mural art projects in public space, including the Dones de Ciencia project carried out for the Polytechnic University of Valencia and the Center for Innovation Las Naves of the Valencia City Council.
For several years she balanced her artistic practice with teaching in plastic arts, an activity that influenced her research on painting processes and the learning of drawing and painting. In recent years she temporarily reduced her artistic production to focus on this teaching work.
She has now decided to fully resume her studio work, focusing her activity on the production of original painting and the development of new pictorial series.
