Antique Caryatid - 19th century

For sale: an exceptional, hand-carved console made of solid wood. The central motif of this architectural support is a Satyr (or Faun) – a mythological being with the upper body of a man and the characteristic legs of an animal (goat).

The carving is extremely detailed and sculpturally vivid. The Satyr is embedded in an arrangement of ornate volutes and foliage. Such figures were often used in the Baroque period as decorative consoles for friezes, shelves, or as part of princely furniture pieces. The dark patina gives the object an authentic, historic aura.
