Alter Belutsch Rare Patterns - Rug - 170 cm - 92 cm

The Belutsch are a nomadic ethnic group from the Beluchistan region, a district neighboring Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Belutsch rugs can be made on a foundation of cotton or wool, and goat or horsehair is often used in the weft. Traditionally they were made from sheep- or goat-wool from the tribes' own herds, while modern Belutsch rugs usually have a cotton warp.

The carpets are generally smaller due to their tribal origin and are woven on horizontal looms with vivid, geometric patterns. Curved life-tree motifs as well as prayer rugs with a prayer niche are typical and sought-after examples. The classic backgrounds in dark red, brown or blue often contrast with lively patterns in white, ivory, yellow or orange tones. Belutsch rugs are relatively thin but densely woven, making them soft and pliable.
