Sean Scully is an Irish-born American naturalized painter, born in Dublin on June 30, 1945

He thus works in the vein of American Expressionism, where he aims to metaphorically reveal a certain social reality. Thanks to his Knox Fellowship, he was a student at Harvard University for a year. In 1972, during his time at Harvard University, he used strips of adhesive tape and spray paints to compose grids in which horizontal, vertical, or oblique bands intertwine, all expressivity banished. He decides to set up a studio in Barcelona in 1994. He turns to pastels and to woodcut and copperplate etching. Sean Scully, 2015.
1995, a new step in his work, the Floating Paintings, aluminum boxes that are fixed to the wall by their narrow side, the other sides are painted forming a three-dimensional painting.
In October 1996, his first retrospective in France is presented at the Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume, which reveals him to the French public. He decides to set up a studio in Barcelona in 1994. He turns to pastels and to woodcut and copperplate etching.
