DESCRIPTION:
The museum director and art historian Dr. Friedhelm Häring describes Ralf Altrieth’s pictorial universe as follows:
"There is a lot of poetry in this painting, as in all of the artist’s works. They are populated with narrative codes and fantastical tales. In this sense, Ralf Altrieth’s pictorial poems are a pure childish chant. [...] But the most astonishing thing that appears in these canvases is a communicative tenderness for the emotional states of human beings."
In his paintings, Ralf Altrieth lets forms emerge and transform with the stroke, in a free and spontaneous movement. Figures often appear fleetingly, as if wavering between being and vanishing.
The image forms through superpositions; the elements seem to float, respond to each other, intertwine, creating a living and open visual space.
An expressive work that immediately captures the eye and gradually reveals all of its richness.
BIOGRAPHY:
Ralf Altrieth is a German-born painter and musician. Trained in his teens with painter Georg Schaible, then at the Nürtingen University of Fine Arts in the late 1980s, he has exhibited in France and Germany, notably at Galerie Hartmut Beck (Erlangen), MAC Paris, and Galerie Théo de Sein (Paris). He lives and works today in the south of France.
