Bronze Burmese Buddha statue of Shakyamuni seated in vajrasana with the right hand in bhumisparsha mudra and the left hand on the thigh, wearing a samghati and weighing 1647 g, 26.2 cm high, 12.6 cm wide, 8.9 cm deep, dating to the late 18th century, provenance Collection privée, authenticity Original/officiel, in fair condition with age-related oxidation, sold without a stand.
Description from the seller
DESCRIPTION
Beautiful and elegant bronze statue depicting Shakyamuni Buddha seated in vajrasana, right hand in bhumisparsha mudra, bearing witness to the earth, the left resting on its heel, wearing the samghati, with a serene and gentle expression, almond-shaped half-closed eyes, elongated lobes, in meditation.
The youthful expression of the face gives the nickname "baby face" to this type of Buddha. It is also noted the tilted position of the base, which is rare. The "ball" he holds in his left hand is the stylized representation of the Vitarka Mudra and symbolizes the transmission of teaching.
The back of the plinth bears traces of old scrapes, corresponding to the fact that when a monastery sold a statue, religious writings were often erased.
Height: 26.2 cm. Width: 12.6 cm. Depth: 8.9 cm. Weight: 1647 g
Burma, late 18th century, early 19th century, from my personal collection.
CONDITION
The statue is in fair condition, shows the signs of its age, oxidation. See photos.
