Description from the seller
Heavy, magnificent, richly decorated antique oil hanging lamp (lift-lamp) from the late 19th or early 20th century.
This lamp is a stunning example of historicism, executed with a deep red (oxblood) majolica reservoir, adorned with hand-painted yellow floral motifs in relief. The lamp is fitted with an authentic brass lift mechanism (pulley) with a decorative counterweight, making the lamp easily adjustable in height.
Special features:
• The Burner: Equipped with a high-quality "Royal Brenner 15'''" brass burner. The burner is in a beautiful, unpolished condition.
• The Shade: A large, milky-white (opaline) glass shade that creates a soft, diffused light.
• The Fringe: Unique and rare bead fringe in black, gold and amber. This fringe is striking and gives the lamp an extra luxurious look.
• The Frame: Gracefully cast brass/bronze frame with floral motifs and human figures in the side arms. Running girls with a basket.
Specifications:
• Origin: Europe (likely Germany or France)
• Period: circa 1890 - 1910
• Materials: Majolica, Brass, Opaline glass,
• Type: 15-line Royal Brenner
The Brand: Royal Brenner
The inscription "ROYAL BRENNER" on the burner disc indicates a quality brand from the late 19th or early 20th century (circa 1890-1910). Although the name sounds English, this type of burners was often produced by renowned German manufacturers (such as Schuster & Baer or Wild & Wessel) for the international market. It was a very popular and reliable model for fine living-room lamps.
On the burner is written "15''' I a".
• The 15''' stands for 15 'lines' (an old French measurement, the ligne). This indicates the width of the cotton wick and thus the size of the burner.
• 15-lines is the standard size for large hanging lamps; it provided enough light to illuminate an entire dining table.
• The addition "I a" often stands for "Prima" quality, which at the time meant the highest grade of finish and material use.
