Description from the seller
Oil on canvas mounted on cardboard, signed lower left.
Dimensions of painting alone: 30,5 x 40,5 cm, with frame included: 39 x 49 cm. Painting in good condition, the canvas panel is just slightly cupped. The frame has one hole (Ø 5mm) in each corner and also shows signs of wear on the outer sides due to former wall mounting of the artwork.
João Califórnia was born in 1929, in the fishing town of Peniche, formerly a village, about 75 km north-west of Lisbon. He passed away in 2001 in Lisbon. From a very young age, he showed great aptitude for the arts, with a particular focus on drawing. Therefore, it was not surprising that in 1947 he entered Escola Superior de Belas-Artes de Lisboa (the Lisbon School of Fine Arts), where he studied painting, drawing and decoration. In 1956, he graduated with distinction from his higher education course in Painting, a key moment that led him to decide to dedicate his life to painting, specializing in the palette knife technique. João Califórnia remains, to this day, one of the greatest exponents of Portuguese landscape painting, especially in the difficult and refined technique of palette knife painting. He is represented in numerous public and private collections.
