Bronze Burmese Buddha statue from the Ava period, 18th century, seated in vajrasana with the right hand in bhumisparsha mudra and the left holding a stylised Vitarka mudra sphere; height 31.5 cm, width 15.5 cm, depth 9.7 cm, weight 2803 g; origin Myanmar; authenticity original/officiel; condition good with age-related wear and a small loss at the base; sold without stand.
Description from the seller
DESCRIPTION
Beautiful bronze statue representing Shakyamuni Buddha seated in vajrasana, the right hand in bhumisparsha mudra, calling the earth to witness, the right resting on the heel, wearing the samghati, the serene and gentle expression, almond-shaped half-closed eyes, elongated earlobes, in meditation.
The “ball” he holds in his left hand is the stylised representation of the Vitarka Mudra and symbolises the transmission of teaching.
Attention, resin has been poured inside, probably to make the statue more stable; the core is therefore not visible, but there is no doubt about the age of the piece.
