Description from the seller
20th-century painter Jean du Rieu.
Jean du Rieu was active in the mid-20th century, especially around the 1940s–1960s. He was probably born in the early 20th century. Exact birth and death dates are not always unambiguously documented in public art-historical sources, but he clearly belongs to the modern (20th-century) generation.
What did he paint?
He is best known for:
• Flower still lifes
• Oil paintings on canvas
• Decorative, atmospheric compositions
• Classical-realistic style with warm colors
His floral pieces (such as roses, field bouquets, and table still lifes) are often built quite traditionally and intended as decorative art for interiors.
Style
• Realistic to light impressionistic
• Rich, full brushwork
• Strong use of color
• Influence of French and Dutch floral still-life tradition
Technique: Hand-painted with thick paint (impasto), giving the flowers almost a relief.
• Style: Decorative-impressionistic / modern classical — not strictly academic, but focused on mood and color.
• Composition: A vertical arrangement with a vase and a rich bouquet, typical for wall decoration from the 20th century (often 1950–1980).
• Color use: Bright, contrasting colors (red, yellow, blue, white) against a soft, abstract background.
• Purpose: Probably made as interior art (thus more decorative than museum-worthy).
His work was sold a lot in the 20th century through galleries and art trade and regularly appears at auctions.
