Nicknamed by Gabriele D'Annunzio the Divine, she is the greatest theatrical actress of her time and one of the greatest of all time, an undisputed symbol of modern theater, though she was far from a diva as commonly understood. Contemporary critic Hermann Bahr called her «the greatest actress in the world». Acclaimed, she undertook tours abroad always performing in Italian. Admired and celebrated abroad, she was misunderstood and not recognized at home.
Spectators, before falling in love with her way of being on stage, remained "disconcerted". For her, theater was an "existential shock", not an aesthetic or cultural experience. She touched deep layers never seen before, pushing the art of acting to extreme limits. Her art was elusive and painful; she was described as "a spiritual phenomenon" capable of having "confidences with the unknown". Together with other protagonists of thought and art of her time, from Nietzsche to Ibsen, she transformed the consciousness of the 20th century. Many great masters of the century regarded her as a kindred spirit.
