Description from the seller

About the work

In this painting Gyl draws the spectator into a scene inspired by ancient Egypt, where two young women, richly adorned with jewelry and traditional headpieces, sit facing each other in a temple whose walls are covered with hieroglyphic motifs.
At the center of the composition, a small Senet game board — emblematic of ancient Egyptian civilization — becomes the point of tension and concentration. The players, absorbed, move their pieces with a delicacy almost ritual, as if every gesture carried symbolic or spiritual significance.
The warm, golden light bathes the monumental architecture in the background, guiding the eye toward a distant statue that suggests divine presence or the sacred dimension of the scene. This depth enhances the contrast between the intimacy of the game and the grandeur of the place.
The bodies are depicted with softness and elegance, in an idealized aesthetics reminiscent of classical art and a contemporary, imagined vision of ancient Egypt. The ochre, sand and turquoise tones dominate, reinforcing an atmosphere that is at once sensuous, peaceful and timeless.
The work thus evokes a subtle balance between competition and complicity, between the everyday and the sacred, inscribing this suspended moment in a form of eternity.
