Javier Plata
Algeciras, 1976
Javier Plata is a multidisciplinary artist whose work travels between painting, sculpture and installation, notable for a personal aesthetic that explores matter, territory and the human condition. His training took place at the Art Schools of Algeciras and Granada, where he obtained qualifications in relief casting, molding, ceramics, wood carving, sculpture in stone and graphic design. This broad technical spectrum has enriched his visual language with an artisanal and experimental perspective.
Throughout his career, Plata has participated in workshops with renowned artists such as Sigrifo Martín Begué, within the program “The Painter and His Facets” (Cadiz Provincial Council, 2002), and Wilfredo Prieto, with the workshop “Incidences of the Private to the Public and from the Public to the Private” (NMAC Foundation, 2013), experiences that shaped his view on the limits of contemporary art.
His work has been shown in prominent spaces and artistic events, in both solo and group exhibitions. Among his most representative solo shows are “Men and Worms” (Galería Manolo Alés, La Línea, 2008), “Origin” (Galería Manolo Alés, 2017), “Sub Rosa” (Virtual Gallery, Cádiz Provincial Council, 2022) and “What’s Always Been and What’s Now” (Fine Arts Gallery, Gibraltar, 2023).
He has taken part in numerous group exhibitions, notably “Hispano-French Friendship” at the former MEAC in Madrid (1999), “Contemporaries 2008” (Cadiz Art Fair), “Art Project Marbella” and “Art Project Estepona” (Ciancimino Gallery), as well as recent initiatives such as “Ten Years Is Nothing” (Tpop), “Here We All Paint” (ASANSULL) or “Estereographic Vol.2” (Levadura Cultural Association).
Recognition of his career includes numerous awards and mentions. He received the First Prize for Best Young Artist at International Art Gibraltar (1995), as well as first prizes in competitions such as Heritage Trust Gibraltar (2015), Acuarela Goya Virtual (Bilbao, 2016), and the IX Julio Quesada International Prize (Crevillente, 2016). In 2021 he won the First Prize at the Alwani Summer Painting Exhibition in Gibraltar; in 2024 he participated in Manchester Art Fair, consolidating his international profile.
Javier Plata’s work is defined by a constant search for balance between the conceptual and the material, with a discourse that dialogues with memory, identity and border spaces, both physical and symbolic.
