Malick Sidibé (1936-2016) - Baptism Matinee - 1968
Silver gelatin print on baryta paper - Signed and titled by Malick Sidibé in 2000. Unique print.
Born in 1936 in Soloba, Mali. Died in Bamako in April 2016. The first known body of work by Malick Sidibé was a photo reportage taken during celebrations organized by young people passionate about music and freedom as the country prepared for independence.
In 1962, he opened the “Malick Studio” in Bamako. Studio portraits constituted the core of his work. People came from all over to be photographed with the eye of Bamako. He drew attention at the first Rencontres de la Photographie in Bamako, then exhibited at the Fondation Cartier in Paris and in the world's leading galleries and museums. He received the Hasselblad Prize in 2003 and the Golden Lion in 2007.
