Original Burmese wooden statue lacquered and gold-leafed, depicting a monk worshipper, 19 cm high, 7.8 cm wide, 9.3 cm deep, from the early 20th century, Myanmar, authentic/original, in good condition with some gilt wear, sold without a stand.
Description from the seller
DESCRIPTION
Burmese statue representing a monk or worshipper, disciple of Buddha; these statues were offered by devotees to pay homage, in lacquered wood and gold leaf.
They were placed near the Buddha statue in temples or monasteries.
A complete set could include up to 7 figurines representing the most important disciples who received their teaching from Buddha himself and venerated in Burma.
Depending on the wealth of the donors, these could donate a single statue or several.
Very fine original lacquer and gilding; the monk's name is inscribed on the front of the statue, the inscription is old but later.
Circa first half of the 20th century, region of Bagan.
19 cm in height, 7.8 cm in width, 9.3 cm in depth.
Old decorative object.
I have been collecting these statuettes since my first trip to Burma, in the early 1990s, and the dealers I work with collected them for me, before the coup.
CONDITION
Good condition for an object of this era but shows the marks of its age; the gilding is partially erased in some places, which does not detract from its charm (see photos).
Careful and traceable shipping.
