Standing crowned Buddha statue from Thailand, gilded bronze/copper alloy dating to the 19th‑century Rattanakosin period, 37.5 cm high, 10 cm wide, 12 cm deep, weighing 1452 g, in good antique condition with visible age wear and loss of gold leaf mainly at the back and lower areas.
Description from the seller
An impressive and finely cast gilded bronze figure of a Crowned Buddha (Phra Song Khruang), dating from the Rattanakosin period (19th century), Thailand.
The Buddha is depicted in a majestic standing pose on a tall, octagonal pedestal with multiple levels, adorned with traditional lotus leaf motifs. He performs the double Abhaya Mudra (the gesture of reassurance and fearlessness), which in Thai tradition specifically refers to the episode of the "Calming of the Ocean".
Adorned in elaborate royal regalia, including a tall, layered pointed crown (Khon style), wing-like ear ornaments, a heavy pectoral collar and finely worked garments. The face has a serene, meditative expression with downcast eyes and a subtle smile.
The statue is cast in a bronze/copper alloy using the traditional 'lost-wax method'. It features an original layer of black lacquer over which genuine gold leaf (gilding) has been applied, which shows a beautiful craquelé effect and patina that suit the age.
