Description from the seller
Marco Ercoli (1986) Italy
Title: Daily-Samurai
Technique: paper-layering
Composition: Over 10,000 sheets of colored paper from the manufacturer, personally selected at 180 g, cut, shaped, and individually glued by hand.
Process: Each sheet follows the millimeter cross-section of the weapon, creating a solid structure that, in density and weight, returns the paper to its original essence: wood.
Year: 2015
Dimensions: 1:1 Katana (100x5x0.3)
Signature on the guard
In an era dominated by the speed of digital technology and mass production, Daily-Samurai stands out as an artwork of silent resistance and extraordinary conceptual density. Here, the artist performs an almost alchemical operation: paper, a material traditionally fragile and two-dimensional, is ennobled through a monumental layering process that changes its physical nature.
The Anatomy of Time
The heart of the work lies in its process. The technique of paper-layering is not understood here as mere decoration, but as an act of micro-architecture. The use of over 10,000 sheets of 180-gram paper, glued millimetrically following the cross-section of a Katana, transforms the object into a contemporary fossil.
Through the pressure and sequence of the individual layers, the work achieves a solidity that evokes the weight of wood or the rigidity of steel. It is a cyclical return to the origins: the pulp of cellulose, compressed, returns to be fiber, trunk, life force.
Chromaticism and Symbolism
The choice of color scale — a gradient fading from the warm tones of the hilt to the deep blue and emerald of the blade tip — breaks the classic iconography of the weapon.
The Guard (Tsuba): The place of the signature and the pivot of the grip, appears as the point of accumulation of energy that propagates along the blade.
The Body: The visible stratification creates a texture reminiscent of wood grain or, paradoxically, the thermo-mechanical folds of traditional Japanese Tamahagane steel.
Critical Considerations
Daily-Samurai is a reflection on paradox. The Katana, symbol of cutting and separation, is here built through unity and cohesion. The artist does not 'carve' by subtraction, but builds by addition, making tangible the dimension of time: each sheet represents a moment, a chromatic choice, a repetitive gesture that culminates in a geometric 1:1 perfection.
The work is not only an aesthetic object but a crystallized performance in which patience becomes the true plastic material. It is a sculpture that invites close observation, where the eye can wander through the millimetric stratification, then step back to admire the fluidity of a form that seems ready to cleave the air.
Technical Details:
Technical: Manual millimetric stratification sculpture (Unique Piece).
Material: Fine 180 g paper treated for wood-like solidity.
