Rosemondt, Confessionale, sive Libellus, a Latin, 742-page religious tract on confession bound in parchment (16.5 × 11 cm), published in 1554 by Joannes de Winghe in Löwen, in very good condition as an antique rarity.
Description from the seller
Absolute rarity.
Rosemondt, Godscalck:
Confessio, sive Libellus modum confitendi pulcherrime complectens [...]. J. de Winghe, 1554
A rare and bibliophilically interesting exemplar of Godscalck Rosemondt, Confessio, sive Libellus modum confitendi pulcherrime complectens, printed by J. de Winghe, Leuven 1554.
The Flemish theologian and humanist Rosemondt (ca. 1483–1559), a contemporary and friend of Erasmus of Rotterdam, wrote with this work a pastoral-theological manual for the sacrament of confession. The text stands in immediate connection with late medieval confession literature and documents the transitional period between scholastic tradition and humanist-Catholic reform.
The present exemplar originates from the workshop of Joannes de Winghe, which operated in Leuven in the 16th century and was known for its carefully set theological prints. The volume is preserved in a contemporary parchment binding. Particularly noteworthy: fragments of incunabula leaves were used as reinforcement in the binding – a characteristic and sought-after feature of early modern volumes.
An exceptionally rare work, hardly ever found on the market, of significant interest both for theologians and for collectors of humanist prints.
16,5x11cm. browned parchment binding with cords (rear preserved), visible incunabula in the binding. Page numbering runs only on the right (recto) pages continuously to 371 (equivalent to 742 pages). Overall interior in very good condition.
