Description from the seller
Antique speculaas board – hand-carved cookie mold – ca. 1850–1900
A beautiful and authentic wooden speculaas board from the second half of the 19th century, richly hand-carved. This traditional baking mold features two figures in historical dress – a man and a woman – executed with striking detail and craftsmanship.
Speculaas boards were used for centuries in the Netherlands, Belgium and parts of Germany to form speculaas and gingerbread cookies. The dough was pressed firmly into the carved wooden mold, after which the pattern became visible in the cookie. The motifs often told stories or referred to historical figures, folklore, crafts or festive traditions, especially around Sinterklaas and other winter celebrations.
This piece is carved from solid wood and shows a beautiful, natural patina developed through long use and age. The deep and decorative carving technique clearly demonstrates the maker’s craftsmanship. Such boards were usually produced by specialist woodcarvers and were often used for generations in bakeries or households.
The reverse shows the typical signs of age, including old wormholes. The object has now been professionally treated against woodworm so it can be stored and exhibited safely.
Today, antique speculaas boards are highly valued as decorative folk art objects. They fit perfectly in a country kitchen, a collection of culinary antiquities, or as wall decor in an interior with a historical look.
