This is a beautiful example of Wakasa Lacquerware, a prestigious traditional lacquerware craft from Obama City, Fukui Prefecture. This sweets bowl was produced by the renowned Soun-kobo (古川若狭塗店 蘇雲工房), a specialist workshop dedicated to preserving the 400-year history of this "National Traditional Craft."
Wakasa-nuri is famous for its "Togidashi" (burnished) technique. Unlike other lacquer styles, it uses materials like eggshells, mother-of-pearl (Raden), and pine needles to create patterns, which are then covered with multiple layers of lacquer and meticulously polished. The result is a stunning, multidimensional pattern that resembles a galaxy or a crystalline structure. This piece features beautiful iridescent mother-of-pearl inlays that catch the light elegantly.
Soun-kobo is a well-established workshop in the heart of the Wakasa region. The box is signed with the workshop's name and seal, guaranteeing its authenticity and quality as a genuine piece of Fukui's lacquerware heritage.
The item is in very good vintage condition overall with minimal wear.
