Rare group of yatate, ancient portable Japanese writing sets. They were used for writing with ink and brush while traveling. They consist of an ink container (often containing soaked cotton) and a housing for the brush. They are typically made of metal, such as brass or copper, and sometimes decorated with engravings. Similar specimens date mainly from the Edo period. Meticulously detailed, with animal decorations and engravings. The indicated measurements are those of the larger inkwell.
