Antique Caryatid - 19th century

An extraordinary, hand-carved solid wood console is for sale. The central motif of this architectural support is a Satyr (or Faun) – a mythical being with the upper body of a man and the characteristic legs of an animal (goat).

The carving is extremely detailed and three-dimensional. The Satyr is embedded in an arrangement of artful volutes and foliage. Such figures were often used in the Baroque era as decorative consoles for corbels, shelves, or as part of stately furniture pieces. The dark patina gives the object an authentic, historic aura.
