Description from the seller
A beautiful copy of the "Rip Van Winkle" by Washington Irving, masterfully illustrated by Arthur Rackham.
1908. Third reprint of the first trade edition, dated September 1908, with the first print being published three years earlier. Published by William Heinemann in London.
Very fine collector's copy.
Very beautifully illustrated and decorated book by Arthur Rackham with tipped-in full-colour frontispiece and 50 tipped-in full-colour illustrations at the back of the book, mounted on green paper and protected by captioned tissue guards.
The tipped-in illustrations, the green paper mounts and the tissue guards in perfect condition, probably as good as new.
Hardcover. Bound in publisher's original decorated green cloth binding with gold stamping and lettering on the cover and gold lettering on the spine. Decoration by the artist to front cover. Gilt good, shining allover.
Boards fine, slightly scuffed by extremities, lightly faded on front cover, towards lower right corner, corners with really very little bumpings and with some shelf wear.
Spine with some sunning. A circa 3 cm split on the edge with the back cover, towards the middle, without any consequences to its appearance. Extremities a little bit frayed and bumped.
All page edges stained green.
Boards holding very well, joints very firm and secure indeed.
Interior as good as you can get for its age. With almost no sign of age, some odd toning and a small tear of ca. 3 cm at lower edge of page 53/54. Endpapers plain green as issued. Brief antiquarian pencil inscriptions on back endpapers, hardly perceptible.
Illustrations perfect, mounting pages and tissue guards perfect.
Dimensions: 26 x 19.5 cm. XII + 61 pages.
