His mother was 15 years old when he was born and his father left her very early. He played basketball at Georgetown University. Iverson was first recruited in 1996 by the Philadelphia 76ers. Here he played ten years. He played there with number 3. Iverson was especially known for his speed, his layups and his crossovers. In his first season he was voted Rookie of the Year (1996-97), in 2001 he was chosen MVP (Most Valuable Player) of the NBA, furthermore he started in seven consecutive All-Star Games (2000-2006) - in which he was named MVP twice (2001 and 2005) - and he was allowed to play in the United States national team. The absolute pinnacle of his career is the NBA Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers in 2001, in which he could disrupt the Lakers' winning streak for one game. He was also NBA MVP of the year.

In January 2007 he went to play for the Denver Nuggets. There he started playing because he said he wanted a different adventure, but really mainly to be able to win an NBA title. Then in November 2008 he went to the Detroit Pistons. He was traded for Chauncey Billups, Antonio McDyess and Cheikh Samb. In September 2009 he signed a one-year contract with the Memphis Grizzlies. After two months he returned for a season to the Sixers

On October 26, 2010 Yahoo! Sports reports that Iverson has agreed to a two-year contract of $4 million net per year with the Turkish basketball club Beşiktaş JK. The club announced the signing at a press conference in New York on October 29, 2010. Iverson made his debut for Beşiktaş on November 16, 2010, during a Eurocup game against Serbian Hemofarm. Iverson scored 15 points in 23 minutes.

In August 2013 Iverson hung up his playing career.
