Meiji-period Japanese Imari porcelain basket, circa 1880, decorated in iron red, deep blue and black with floral motifs, measuring 19 cm long, 20 cm wide, 18 cm high and weighing 1470 g.
Description from the seller
Japanese porcelain Imari basket – ca. 1880
A decorative porcelain basket executed in the characteristic Imari style, originating from Japan and dating to around 1880. The object is richly painted with the typical combination of iron-red, deep blue and black accents, which is so quintessential for Imari porcelain from the late 19th century.
The basket shape with an upstanding rim and integrated handle gives the piece a playful yet functional character. Such baskets were often used as serving or presentation pieces, but also served as decorative objects within both Japanese and European interiors, where Imari porcelain was highly sought after.
The decorations consist of floral motifs and ornaments, carefully applied and distributed over the surface, giving the whole a lively and balanced appearance. The contrasting colors and the glossy glaze enhance the visual impact and make this a striking item.
A charming and collectible object that reflects the international popularity of Japanese porcelain in the 19th century.
