Square lacquered box on a wooden base from China dating to the twentieth century, with gold detailing and polychromy, from a private collection, in good condition and authentic/original.
Description from the seller
Square-lid box with rounded corners, lacquered over a wooden base, with floral drawings in gold and polychromy
• Dimensions: Approximately 23.6 × 22.8 × 11.8 cm
• Condition: Well preserved overall, with warm-colored lacquer and clearly defined gold designs; shows slight wear and small dents at the corners, a result of use and transmission over time, not affecting its overall aesthetics or collectible value.
The technique of gilding with lacquer and polychromy was used: first the outlines of the flowers were delineated with adhesive lacquer for gilding, then filled with gold powder, and finally touches of red, green and other colors were added to the centers of the flowers and the veins of the leaves, achieving rich layered designs with great splendor. This technique was common in imperial court lacquer and in high-quality lacquer pieces during the Qing dynasty, and it reflects an exceptional level in lacquer art.
In the center there is a main floral motif in the shape of a rosette, surrounded by entwined lotuses and chrysanthemums, with a symmetric and abundant composition that symbolizes “prosperity and longevity, as well as peace and security in the four seasons”.
