WORK DESCRIPTION
“Sofie” is a monumental artwork by Dirk de Bruycker, one of Belgium’s most recognized contemporary artists of the late 20th century, active internationally in Europe and the United States. The composition depicts an industrial-architectural watermill motif, rendered with expressive, emotional, and highly gestural execution, typical of his mature style.
The title “Sofie” likely references a personal memory — perhaps a close friend, muse, or symbolic place significant to the artist. De Bruycker frequently assigned feminine names or titles suggesting emotional or personal connections, integrating memory with creative expression.
The work balances drawing and painting, combining dynamic line, materiality, and color tension, resulting in a fully autonomous artistic statement rather than a preparatory sketch.
