Description from the seller
DESCRIPTION
"Male Portrait", oil on canvas, 50x40 cm with frame, 40x30 cm the canvas alone, German school, datable to the second half of the 19th century.
The painting presents the likeness of an elderly man captured in a three-quarter pose on a dark and neutral background, which enhances his volume. The subject is rendered with extraordinary attention to facial details: the silvery hair, finely treated, frames a face marked by deep wrinkles that tell of experience and dignity. The gaze, clear and directed slightly beyond the observer, together with the hint of a barely sketched smile, confer on the portrait a notable psychological introspection. The attire, characterized by the precision of a dark jacket, a white starched collar, and a black bow tie, denotes the subject’s belonging to a solid bourgeois or intellectual class typical of Central European society of the era.
From a technical standpoint, the work stands out for a deft brushwork that alternates more fluid, veiled passages in the shadowed areas with more tactile and decisive touches in the lighted spots. The composition is dominated by a skilful chiaroscuro: the light strikes the face from the side, shaping the forms and highlighting the texture of the skin through a warm and natural color range, in stark contrast with the coldness of the background. This approach fully situates itself in the tradition of 19th-century German portraiture, which found reference in masters such as Franz von Lenbach or Wilhelm Leibl as benchmarks for a realism that was not only outward, but capable of probing the subject’s soul. The work bears witness to that transition between academic idealism and a cruder, more modern verismo, where the almost photographic precision of the German school blends with a deep painterly sensibility.
CONDITION REPORT
Excellent overall condition. The work is intact in every part with vivid and legible chroma and brushwork. The frame is offered as a courtesy.
Tracked and insured shipping with appropriate packaging.
