Description from the seller
Grand Mosque Chandelier Monumental
Mameluk Style
Egypt circa 1880/1900
Height 160 cm
Large floor-standing luminaire (monumental chandelier or censer) in finely chiseled and pierced copper alloy. This piece is a masterful testimony of the “Mamluk Revival” of the late 19th century, a period when artisans in Cairo and Damascus reached an unequaled technical perfection to decorate palaces and religious buildings.
The entire shaft and base are clad in a “honeycomb” mesh, allowing spectacular diffusion of light or the smoke of incense.
Presence of broad epigraphic cartouches in Thuluth style, reproducing honorific and blessing formulas ("The Eternal Glory", "Prosperity"). The letters are cut with remarkable precision.
Some traces of natural oxidation (verdigris) in the recesses. The object is dirty, and will need cleaning or not, according to the preferences of each.
(Small tip for the future buyer: the lamp consists of 2 parts that fit together; you must join the two pieces by turning the upper part until you find the angle that locks and stabilizes it)
