Description from the seller
SPECIAL HIGHLIGHT: ORIGINAL FRAME OF "DE PROTECTOR" AMSTERDAM**
This exceptional painting is offered in its original frame from the renowned Amsterdam art dealership "De Protector" - a rare and valuable unique selling point that underlines the authenticity and historical significance of the work.
"De Protector" was one of the leading art dealers and framing studios in Amsterdam (active from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century). The gallery worked exclusively with established and recognized artists and produced high-quality frames for significant Dutch masters. A De Protector frame was a quality seal and shows that Cor Bouter belonged to the professionally represented artists of his time.
MEANING OF THE ORIGINAL FRAME:
The original label "De Protector Amsterdam" on the back confirms the authenticity and professional provenance of the painting. The frame and the work are an inseparable unit from the time of creation (approx. 1920-1940). The classically elegant dark-toned wooden molding with subtle profiling is stylistically perfectly matched to the painting and the Hague School.
Most paintings from this era were reframed over the decades - a preserved original frame is exceptionally rare and highly valued by collectors. The frame is in excellent condition with only minimal age-related signs of use. No damage, repairs, or restorations.
ARTIST:
Cornelis Bouter, known as "Cor Bouter" (Rotterdam 1888 - The Hague 1966), Dutch painter of the Hague School. Student of the Royal Academy of The Hague. Known for atmospheric landscapes, dune scenes, and marine painting. Member of the artists’ associations Pulchri Studio and Arti et Amicitiae.
WORK:
Oil on canvas, depicting a mother with two children in a domestic interior. The composition shows an intimate family scene with a warm, subdued color palette in earthy brown, ochre, and red tones. Characteristic impressionistic brushwork with impasto and loose brushstrokes, typical of the Hague School.
SPECIALITY:
Interior scenes are extremely rare in Bouters’ oeuvre, who mainly painted landscapes and coastal views. This makes the present work an unusual and particularly collector-interesting example of his period of work.
SIGNATURE:
Clearly signed at lower left "Cor Bouter".
DIMENSIONS:
Image size: 80 × 100 cm (without frame)
Frame size: ca. 95 × 115 cm (with frame)
CONDITION:
Very good original condition. Canvas tightly stretched, no cracks or holes. Layer of paint stable and intact, no flaking or retouching. Minimal patina consistent with age. Varnish even, no distracting dirt.
PROVENANCE:
Over 60 years in German private possession (family collection). The painting has been carefully kept, never publicly exhibited, and never reframed - which explains both the excellent condition and the preservation of the original framing.
REVERSE SIDE:
Original label of the art dealership "De Protector Amsterdam" (readable and intact). Back-stretched canvas on a stretcher. Signs of age and patina confirm the authenticity and age of the work.
SHIPPING:
Professionally packaged and insured for shipping. Shipping costs are borne by the buyer.
