Olaf Martens - Sin titulo

Olaf Martens is a German photographer who composes his images in an excentric manner as if it were a theater play, and in many cases with surreal results. His photographs, often built on a palpable humorous base, combine fashion, documentary, conceptual, social, even animal photography, and references to historical and socio-political art. His work has left a personal imprint, easily recognizable and claimed by major brands, which continue to appreciate the freshness and cynicism of his work.
In his images, there is no doubt, all kinds of excesses, because he plays with the models, with characters he rescues from the street, includes the waitresses of a catering service, the fashion designer, or cleaning ladies.
A student of the renowned Graphik und Buchkunst Academy, his graduation coincided exactly with the regime change, so he developed his creative work under the powerful influence of capitalism.
His beginnings as a photographer took place a few years earlier, in his adolescence, when with a small camera he photographed the few LP covers of Western artists that arrived from the other side of the wall. Martens photographed and resold the covers in an act of rebellion and subsistence.
The artist celebrated the regime change with publications in Western media, such as the Frankfurter Allgemeine and the magazines Stern and Geo. He also began to develop theatrical fashion productions for large brands, which saw in the young photographer a breath of fresh air, an eclectic combination of theater, humor, and historical allegories. This activity gave him more time and money for his projects, but curtailed his creative freedom.
The arrival of digital photography led him to succumb to the fascination of new digital techniques that drove him to explore the new tools to find the best way to capture his art.
His work has been shown in numerous exhibitions: Kunst Museum in Bonn, Grassi Museum in Leipzig, Moscow House of Photography, Leopold Museum in Vienna, German Historical Museum in Berlin, Deichtorhallen in Hamburg, and it is also in a large number of private collectors, such as FC Gundlach Collection and the Sammlung Goetz, Munich.

Olaf Martens is a contemporary photographer recognized mainly for his theatrical, ironic, and provocative style. Although his career stands out more for his international exhibitions and his work in fashion than for a long list of individual awards, he has the following recognitions and notable milestones:
* International Photo Awards (IPA): His project "Dystopia – Spilt Milk", a series that explores the relationship between humans, artificial intelligence, and machines, was awarded in this prestigious international competition.
* Recognition at PHotoEspaña: In 2011, his work was one of the main bets of the EFTI Image Center for the PHotoEspaña festival, where his career as one of the most interesting photographers to emerge from the former East Germany was recognized.
* Presence in Museums and Collections: More than conventional awards, Martens has received validation from the artistic sector through the inclusion of his work in prestigious collections such as the FC Gundlach Collection and the Sammlung Goetz in Munich.
It is important to note that, often, he is associated in searches with prizes of other contemporary photographers (such as the World Press Photo of Fernando Brito or the Sony World Photography Award of Boris Eldagsen), but his status is based on his training at the Leipzig Academy of Visual Arts and his exhibitions in centers such as the Leopold Museum in Vienna or the German Historical Museum in Berlin.
