The red-white-red flag of Austria is among the oldest flags in the world (origin in the Middle Ages, around the 13th century). According to the famous legend of Duke Leopold V, the design arose after a battle, when his white garments were stained with blood and a white band remained visible.
The red-white-green flag of Hungary originated during the 1848 revolution and became the symbol of independence and national identity. The colors stand for strength (red), fidelity (white), and hope (green).
These two flags are closely connected. Between 1867 and 1918 Austria and Hungary were a powerful dual monarchy in Central Europe, arising from the Imperial Austria and the Kingdom of Hungary.
Despite this union, both countries retained their own flag and identity.
