Description from the seller
Dark Shogun (ダーク将軍) - Hand Signed
With this square-format work, Medsan continues his exploration of temporal and cultural crossovers by merging contemporary pop culture with the aesthetics of traditional Japan. This screen print features the iconic antagonist of the most famous space opera universe, brilliantly reimagined as a formidable samurai.
The composition rests on a meticulous integration of ukiyo-e codes and science-fiction elements. The character stands in a martial posture, clad in traditional Japanese armor (yoroi) that faithfully incorporates the famous technological cuirass of the Black Lord. His helmet (kabuto) reinterprets the iconic mask, revealing facial makeup in red (kumadori) typical of Kabuki theater. The weapon he wields—a katana with a blazing blade—ingeniously replaces the original red laser saber, adding immediate visual dynamism.
The impact of the work is amplified by the treatment of the broad dark cape. Its inner lining reveals a detailed celestial map housing the Death Star, creating a clever visual transition between Japanese mythology and space conquest. This ensemble stands out against a rich, textured violet background. The traditional cartouche in the upper right corner, bearing the signature "Medsan" in katakana (メドサン), seals this successful collision of worlds.
A piece with strong visual charisma, resting on a deft cultural reappropriation, ideal for bringing a geek-chic and sophisticated touch to a contemporary space.

About the Workshop:
Atelier Joconde is a workshop of artists gathered around a contemporary, living, and plural creation. Set up as a true hub of artistic production, the workshop operates both in collective creation and in individual approaches, depending on the projects and works. Atelier Joconde is also a family venture. Le Yack, a contemporary figurative painter, develops a narrative and introspective body of work with cinematic and realistic influences. At his side, Medsan, oriented toward pop art painting, explores color, modern iconography, and visual culture. Finally, Neo Pablo engages in a more instinctive exploration, blending abstract art, naïve art, and figurative abstraction. Each work is conceived, created, and followed within the workshop, with a shared artistic standard and a unique identity for each artist.
