Antique seal stamp with a metal seal plate and a turned wooden handle, dating to ca. 1690–1730 in Europe (Arnsberg, Archdiocese of Cologne), overall poor condition with major cracks.
Description from the seller
Ancient seal stamp (Petschaft) – 17th/18th century – Electorate of Cologne / Arnsberg – Ecclesiastical office holder
Offered is an original seal stamp (Petschaft) from the late 17th to early 18th century, presumably from the Arnsberg area in the former Duchy of Westphalia (Electorate of Cologne).
Description:
The stamp has a finely engraved metal seal plate and a turned wooden handle. It depicts a split coat of arms:
- one side with a cross (indication of ecclesiastical or Electoral Cologne affiliation)
- the other side with three stylized roses (2:1 arranged) as a family crest
- above it a religious symbol (cross on a globe)
This combination is typical for personal seals of ecclesiastical dignitaries (e.g., canons or prebendaries) who combined their family crest with their church office.
- Region: Arnsberg / Duchy of Westphalia (Archdiocese of Cologne)
- Dating: ca. 1690–1730
- Classification: personal seal of an ecclesiastical office holder, probably from the milieu of the Wedinghausen monastery.
- Diameter of the seal plate: approx. 16–18 mm
- age-related signs of wear
- overall well preserved
- seal impression present (see photos)
- unique one-off piece, not a standardized official seal
- historically interesting combination of heraldry and ecclesiastical symbolism
- potentially further researchable (identification via archives possible).
A rare collectible for enthusiasts of heraldry, seals, and Westphalian history.
