Ger Lataster
Ger Lataster (Schaesberg, February 16, 1920) is considered one of the Abstract Expressionists. After studying at the Academy of Industrial Arts in Maastricht, he then studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam.
Lataster is able to push abstract expressionism to the extreme. By using contrasting elements, techniques and materials, he continually surprises the viewer. Because Lataster applies these techniques consistently, his works come across as trustworthy, no matter how great the changes in recent years have been.
Well-known works by Lataster include the painting 'Spelende kinderen' ('Playing Children')—made in 1954, commissioned by the municipality of Heerlen—and the monumental ceiling painting for the Mauritshuis in The Hague, Icarus Atlanticus, 1987-1988. Lataster is one of the most successful Dutch artists of his generation.
