Statue, Sint Paulus - 39 cm - Wood

Saint Paul’s sacred woodcarving statue.
Spain, circa 1950 or older.
There is a candle placed on the base.
Therefore, it could be hung.

Beautiful decorative wooden statue probably represents the apostle Saint Paul. It is a carved and polychromed (multicolored painted) artwork that shows strong features of the Romanesque style from the 13th century, such as the graphic rigidity of the drapery and the serene, hieratic pose.

Features of the statue:
Identification: The figure holds a book (the Gospels), which is a traditional attribute for Paul. Although Paul is often depicted with a sword, the combination with a book is common in Christian iconography.

Style: The slender form, almond-shaped eyes, and the way the folds of the garment are carved point to the Catalan school of the medieval period.

Material: The statue is made of wood, with traces of the original color finish still visible (polychromy).

Dimensions: 39 cm high, 9.5 cm wide, and 9.5 cm deep.

Condition: in excellent condition, of course with signs of use. I will leave the old candle in place. It gives the statue character.
