Antique Caryatid - 19th century

For sale is an extraordinary, hand-carved solid wood console. The central motif of this architectural support is a satyr (or faun) – a mythological being with the upper body of a man and the characteristic legs of a animal (goat).

The carving is extremely detailed and three-dimensional. The satyr is set in an arrangement of artistic volutes and foliage. Such figures were often used in the Baroque era as decorative consoles for corbels, shelves, or as part of princely furniture. The dark patina lends the piece an authentic, historic appearance.
