Description from the seller
DESCRIPTION
Ancient Hsun it, a bamboo woven and lacquered offering box composed of 6 interlocking elements, it was used by the faithful to bring food into monasteries; rice was placed in the large bowl, then vegetables on a tray, then the fish or meat, and often tamarind candies were placed under the small upper bowl which could serve as a ladle or a goblet. Region of Bagan, Myanmar, first half of the 20th century.
The family name of the owners of this lacquer is painted on the bottom, which allowed them to locate it.
36.5 cm in height and 37.5 cm in diameter.
Beautiful antique and highly decorative object with a timeless form.
CARNET DE VOYAGE DE JEAN DUMOULIN
During my trip to the Bagan region in 2017, I had the opportunity to purchase a large lot of hsun it from one of my sources who had themselves bought them from a monastery near Monywa that no longer used them, plastic or metal being increasingly used.
STATE
Good condition for an object of this age and which has been used for at least three generations, bears the signs of use, small losses, which do not take away from its charm (see photos). The object could be waxed to restore its shine, but personally I prefer to keep objects in their original state.
A similar model can be found in the book, “Burma and the Art of Lacquer” by Ralph Isaacs and T. Richard Burton (see photos).
Will be carefully packed, traceable and insured shipping.
