BIOGRAPHY AND INSTITUTIONAL PATH:
Hamlet Armas (Cuba, b. 1989) is a visual artist and cultural manager with a solid international track record. He holds a degree in Visual Arts from the University of Arts (ISA) of Havana (2009-2014).
Throughout his career, he has balanced creating works with leading large-scale artistic projects:
• Since 2008: Co-founder and coordinator of the Organizing Committee of the Camagüey International Video Art Festival (FIVAC).
• 2013 - 2021: Co-founder and Projects Director for New Media at CEDINM.
• 2014 - 2016: Professor of the Fundamental Painting Workshop at the Vicentina de la Torre Academy of the Arts.
EXHIBITIONS AND AWARDS: His works are part of important private and institutional collections, notably the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Moreover, his work has circulated actively in the international circuit:
• 2016 - Solo exhibition "Das Land der Ferne" (The Faraway Land), ATELIER G2, Bonn, Germany.
• 2015 - 12th Havana Biennial, Cuba.
• 2014 - Exhibition at the Visual Art School (SVA), New York, USA.
• 2011 - 4th International Video Art Festival "Proyector", Espacio Off Limits, Madrid, Spain.
• Awards and recognitions: 1st prize of the central jury at the 27th City Hall Salon (2017) and the Prize of the Cuban Fund for Cultural Goods (2017).
ABOUT THE CURRENT WORK:
Since arriving in Spain in 2021, his artistic practice has focused on the deconstruction of the urban landscape. In his series 'Nada que ver', the city’s architecture dissolves into abstractions of great visual economy, articulating a reflection on isolation and absence.
