Fertility figure or ancestor possibly from the Baule or Bambara ethnicity. Their hands rest firmly on the belly; for the Baule it is a gesture of peace and respect. The conical breasts and the rounded belly emphasize its function as a fertility figure. It was believed that it served as a home for a spirit that guided the owner in his daily problems.
