Rated Excellent on Trustpilot.
A Japanese stoneware chawan (matcha bowl) dating from 2000–2010, 7.5 cm high and 11 cm in diameter, weighing 275 g, with a warm sandy-beige glaze, an unglazed foot ring revealing terracotta body, and expressive iron-oxide brushwork suggesting a pine or plum branch, in good used condition with no chips or cracks.
Description from the seller
【Item Description】
This elegant chawan (matcha bowl) captivates with its expressive, painterly decoration rendered in iron-oxide pigment over a warm, sandy-beige ground glaze. Bold, calligraphic brushstrokes depicting what appears to be a pine or plum branch sweep dynamically across the exterior, evoking the spontaneous spirit of Japanese ink painting (sumi-e). The glaze surface displays a subtle crackle (kannyu) and a gentle variation in tone — from soft celadon to warm cream — lending the piece an understated, wabi-sabi aesthetic deeply rooted in the Japanese tea ceremony tradition.
The foot ring (kodai) is left unglazed, revealing a warm terracotta-toned stoneware body. A brushed mark is visible on the underside, though the artist remains unidentified. The bowl sits comfortably in the hands with a well-balanced, slightly tapered form suited to the practice of chado (the Way of Tea).
An excellent addition to any collection of Japanese ceramics or for use in the tea ceremony.
