Description from the seller

Mask Kayamba Lega, Democratic Republic of the Congo

A rare and enigmatic presence, at the intersection of the human face and the symbolic animal force

Old collection of a Belgian art-enthusiast family, who acquired this work from a specialized dealer in the Sablon, in Brussels, during the 1980s-1990s.

Authentic Lega mask, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Maniema region and eastern Kivu. This Kayamba-type mask, with anthropozoomorphic character, belongs to the very demanding initiatory universe of Bwami, more precisely to the Yananio rank, a high level of knowledge and distinction within this closed society.

From the outset, this mask imposes a singular presence. Its narrow, almost ascetic face is extended by two tall horn-like excrescences that give it an immediately identifiable silhouette, particularly sought after. This vertical, taut and almost architectural construction places the work in a rare formal vocabulary, where the human figure seems invested with a power other, more symbolic, more secret.

The treatment of the face is of great finesse. Almond-shaped eyes, deeply sacrificed, dialogue with a sharp nasal ridge and a round, half-open mouth, almost murmuring. The whole exudes an expression that is calm, inward, and mysterious, as if suspended between appearance and teaching. Small perforations at the top of the forehead as well as discreet traces on the cheeks further intensify the object's plastic richness.

The natural bichromatism of the surface strongly contributes to its beauty. The light, worn or whitened areas contrast with the darker, patinated parts, giving the mask a vibrant, living reading. This alternation of tones, coupled with the tension of the lines and the economy of drawing, evokes the capacity of great Lega objects to reach a form of radical modernity, long before Western gaze.

In the Bwami frame, masks and figures were not mere decorative objects, but true vehicles of knowledge, memory, and transmission. Each form, each detail, each typology intervened in a complex system of initiation, hierarchy, and moral teaching. Kayamba masks, linked to the high ranks, participated in this codified universe where the object served to reveal, instruct, recall, or distinguish.

This type of mask, with a human face topped by erect horns, ranks among the most striking and rare expressions of the Lega corpus. It appeals as much by its formal strangeness as by the silent force emanating from it. It is a piece of real visual intensity, ideal for a collector sensitive to characterful works, archaic forms, and objects with strong personality.

Ancient mask of a sought-after typology, with a rare silhouette and immediate visual identification, presenting a very beautiful visual presence and strong stylistic coherence.
