Biography
The painter, graphic artist and sculptor Robert Indiana is regarded as one of the most important representatives of the Sign art movement.
Robert Indiana, born as Robert Clark in 1928 in New Castle, Indiana, comes into the world. The boy is adopted right after birth by the Clark couple and spends his childhood near Indiana. From 1958 he calls himself Robert Indiana, originally Robert Clark.
Indiana takes a studio on Coenties Slip at the Lower East Side. Ellsworth Kelly, Agnes Martin, James Rosenquist, Jack Youngerman, Ann Wilson, Charles Hinman and Fred Mitchell also live here — these artists feel united in their rejection of gestural Abstract Expressionism.
In particular, Ellsworth Kelly significantly inspires Robert Indiana (Robert Clark) along this path. The young artist soon paints first works in the hard-edge style (1957).
In 1960 Robert Indiana makes a forward-looking discovery: he finds stencils used to label shipping crates, and from them creates the stencil-like lettering as the leitmotif of his works. The distinctive "Signalkunst" (Signal Art) style of Robert Indiana emerges and soon also refers to other sources such as signage or jukeboxes. Thus Robert Indiana also approaches Pop Art.
In the 1960s Robert Indiana enjoys enormous success. In particular his "LOVE" motif becomes a true icon of these years and in 1970 is even transformed into a monumental sculpture.
Works by Robert Indiana can be seen in major international museums, such as the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, or the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Robert Indiana lived and worked on the island of Vinalhaven in Maine until his death in 2018.

The print will be shipped flat, hence somewhat higher shipping costs.
