Orgasms, a Pop Art work in Giclée and mixed media, 37 cm high by 30 cm wide, 2025, original edition, sold with frame, Italy.
Description from the seller
This intervention on a portrait attributable to Rembrandt acts with surgical precision: it does not destroy the image, but interrupts it at its most sensitive point — the gaze.
The yellow masking tape, applied over the eyes, introduces a temporal and conceptual fracture. On one side, Baroque painting, built on psychological depth and the ability to render the soul through the gaze; on the other, a minimalist contemporary gesture that denies that very access.
The face remains intact, light continues to model the flesh with the typical Rembrandtian softness, but the identity is suspended. The figure no longer looks, and therefore cannot be read. It becomes a mute presence, a frozen archive.
The tape is not merely censorship: it is a device.
– Obscures → prevents the direct relationship
– Protects → preserves the image from visual consumption
– Signals → marks the work as a contemporary object
In this sense, the intervention transforms the portrait into a relic: no longer a representation of a person, but a testimony to the loss of the gaze as a place of truth.
It is a simple gesture, but strategic:
it reduces narrative value to increase conceptual value.
