Description from the seller
The ancestors' cult occupies a fundamental place in Hemba culture, originating in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. For the Hemba, ancestors are not mere figures of the past, but active beings who influence daily life. They are regarded as mediators between the earthly world and the spiritual realm, ensuring protection, fertility and prosperity.
This cult is expressed through rituals, offerings and sacred objects, notably ancestral statuettes (singiti). These wooden sculptures, often characterized by serene features and a hieratic posture, embody the ancestors and serve as supports for their veneration. Placed in family or community sanctuaries, they are regularly honored with libations, songs and dances.
The ancestors cult among the Hemba reinforces continuity between generations and asserts the importance of collective memory. It illustrates a worldview where the past, the present and the future are indivisible, and where the ancestors remain essential guides for the community.
