Description from the seller
Tablettéry Objects and Board Games
Superb set of 3 game boxes, accompanied by their accessories. Charismatic pieces blending the finesse of woodwork with the history of France.
1- Card Box in Mother-of-Pearl Marquetry and Precious Woods
This rectangular box is a remarkable inlay piece, probably from the Art Deco period or mid-20th century.
• Decoration: The lid features a complex geometric marquetry of iridescent mother-of-pearl triangles and contrasting wood species.
• Interior: Partitioned in solid wood (likely mahogany) to house two decks of cards.
• Included accessories: Two complete 54-card decks from the famous Parisian house B.P. Grimaud, collection "Rois de France".
• Card details: Historical portraits of Marguerite de Valois (Queen of Clubs) and Louis XIV (King of Hearts). The cards are presented in their original cases under cellophane.
2- Dice Box in Thuya Burl and Brass
A square-shaped box with exceptional grain, typical of late 19th-century luxury objects
• Material: Entirely made in thuya burl (or amboine burl), offering natural speckled motifs with great depth.
• Finish: Hinges and opening tab in gilded brass.
• Included accessories: Pair of green veined resin dice.
3- Napoleon III Era Workbox
Elegant rectangular box with faceted sides in fine wood veneers (probably rosewood and satinwood). The lid features a rich marquetry of "butterfly wings" within framed borders, centered by a rocaille brass cartouche (no monogram).
Opening is operated by a push-button mechanism on the front. The interior, stained mahogany, is divided into three compartments. The edges are highlighted by protective metal strips.
Era: Second half of the 19th century (circa 1870).
Condition:
• Good overall condition of the marquetry and varnish.
• Push-button mechanism.
• Tiny veneer lifts and signs of wear consistent with age.
• Overall in good usable condition.
Dimensions: 20.5 cm x 13.5 x 5
